2 VERY POPULAR COURSES for Mental Health and AOD Professionals: 'Returning Home, After the War Zone'. Learn why 'coming home' is the hardest part of the war for veterans with Silent Post-Deployment Trauma Injuries: PTSD, TBI, and Substance Use Disorders (SUDs).
Course 5K - 5 Credit Hours - Part 1 of 'Finding Balance After the War Zone - Considerations in the Treatment of Post-Deployment Stress Effects - A Guide for Clinicians'
This course addresses the UNIQUE STRESSORS experienced by US Military Service Members who have been deployed to the War Zones of Iraq and Afghanistan, and the lingering impact of these experiences after return to home. This is a Clinical Guide to the ASSESSMENT and UNDERSTANDING of the Stress Injuries which are commonplace among these returning veterans, and an introduction to the TREATMENT of post-deployment PTSD, Substance Abuse, and Depression.
The course also presents an excellent explanation of the unique CULTURE of Military Service Units in the War Zone - both while there, and after they are re-deployed to home. The Culture of the War Zone in fact gives rise to a surprising phenomenon - and this course explains it well: Most War Zone veterans feel that the hardest part of the war is 'coming home.'
In summary, the course presents an easy-to-follow explanation of the complex DUAL DIAGNOSIS ‘operational STRESS INJURIES’ which are incurred in the war zones of Iraq and Afghanistan – from the neurological effects of trauma to the psychological and spiritual effects – including Substance Use Disorders (SUDs), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Want a quick preview of Course 5K? Go Here
Course 5L - Part 2 of 'Finding Balance After the War Zone - Considerations in the Treatment of Post-Deployment Stress Effects - A Guide for Clinicians'
Course 5L is a companion course to Course 5K. Course 5L addresses the details of interaction between the AOD treatment provider and the War Zone veteran - including how to avoid IATROGENIC EFFECTS (unintentional injury or worsening of the client's condition), and how to avoid running afoul of the internalized military culture.
For example, the course explains why the traditional confrontive approaches to AOD treatment are not appropriate with war zone Veterans - nor is the usual interpretation of 'powerlessness' encountered in 12 Step Programs.
The course also describes needed alternatives to the traditional approaches often utilized in PTSD and trauma resolution (e.g., desensitization and immersion therapy), for use with this post-deployment population.
For war zone veterans, there is a wide variety of cognitive and skills-based approaches which help the veteran to structure his own recovery process - especially important for military service members and veterans. Finally, the CULTURE of the military unit at war and upon returning home is also discussed in more depth than in Course 5K. Want a quick preview of Course 5L? Go Here
In our Ethics Catalog, you can choose from 2, 3, and 4 Hour ETHICS Courses that are very different - the ethics of DOCUMENTING the treatment you do, in your clients' treatment records under the new Health Care Reform environment. More About Managed Health Care and AOD:
THERE'S A MAJOR TRANSITION IN THE SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND ADDICTION FIELD, WHICH SIGNIFICANTLY AFFECTS ALCOHOL AND DRUG COUNSELORS. It's brought on by Managed Care - and now more than ever by the Federal Health Care Reform initiative (the Affordable Care Act, or ACA).
How does this impact the AOD field? LCDCs, LSATs, LCDPs, LADCs, LACACs, LPATs and other Drug Counselors -- are you saying a fast or slow goodbye to those dependable Block Grant contracts? Then take a look at Course 3B - 'The Big Transition In The AOD Field'. It's about surviving the latest shifts in our traditional Addiction Treatment culture. Like what? Like changing up the way that we have always delivered CD-AOD services, with the arrival of new behavioral health contract arrangements. It's a 3-Credit Hour Course.
'Are We Boring? Not On This Web Site!'
Jump to Course 3B in the Catalog - 'Substance Abuse and Chemical Dependency Treatment - The Big Transition'
a.k.a., "The Big Transition in the AOD Field: Assessment of 'Need For Treatment' and 'Treatment Interventions' - How They've CHANGED!'
For those of you who are providing traditional addiction services, and struggling daily with the criteria for obtaining those services - have you seen some particularly disconcerting changes lately?
Is your Substance Abuse and Chemical Dependency contractor wanting something different in the way of treatment for your clients? Like, less intensive services? Shorter stays? Fewer clients authorized for the treatment you think they need? Wondering how to survive these shifts?
This course addresses the 'nitty gritty' of major programmatic, therapeutic, and philosophical changes taking place within the traditional Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) treatment culture, due to a new health care environment. Material applies to single AOD diagnosis and to Dual MH-AOD diagnoses.
The course offers a bird's eye view of how ASSESSMENT of the NEED for TREATMENT - and HOW we DELIVER treatment - have changed under Managed Care and other insurance plans . . . and how to constructively adapt when it's ethically possible.
We also provide an understanding of HOW the MCOs make those controversial treatment decisions for substance abusing and chemically dependent individuals during the CARE MANAGEMENT or Utilization Review (UR) process - and how to ASK for 'WHAT' from the MCO's care manager, to maximize your chances of getting what your clients need.
Click here for Course 2B in the Catalog For something different . . . this course shows how to DOCUMENT both your assessment of need for CD-SA-AOD treatment, and the treatment you deliver - in a way that reduces the chance that your request to provide a particular treatment will denied, and/or that already-paid claims will be 'RECOUPED' by the MCO.
Are you a US Department of Transportation (DOT) SAP needing to renew your license/certification? You can get your 12 hours of relevant CE here. Read on below for the five course options which we recommend.
DOT does not specify the continuing education courses for SAP renewal other than that they must be 'relevant to your performance of SAP duties'. On page 4 of the DOT Substance Abuse Professional Guidelines, DOT defines the type of CE which is required for SAP license renewal: "Continuing Education: During each three-year period following satisfactory completion of your training and examination, you must complete at least 12 professional development hours (e.g., Continuing Education Units) relevant to your performing SAP duties."
Five courses on our site would be particularly relevant to your DOT SAP license renewal:
1. AOD Course 5H - Alcohol Problems in Intimate Relationships: Identification and Intervention with Families and Couples (5 credit hours) - is particularly relevant for working with individuals who are not readily admitting to an alcohol problem. This course includes multiple standardized and empirically validated AOD ASSESSMENT FORMS which may be saved and printed on your computer for personal use. (Whether you decide to enroll in this course and take the quiz or not, you can download these forms for free.)
2. Course 4J - Anger Management for Substance Abuse and Mental Health Clients: A Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Manual - one of our most popular courses.
3. Course 3B - Addiction & Substance Abuse Treatment - 'The Big Transition' This course is relevant to your SAP duty which requires you to develop and recommend a treatment plan for those whom you evaluate. The course addresses how the traditional treatments and recommendations for AOD Abuse have changed under health care reform ('Managed Care') - and how clinicians can document the need for treatment in a way that will be approved by Care Managers in both public and commercial health care plans.
4. Courses 5K and 5L - Parts 1 and 2 of 'After The War Zone - Why Coming Home Is the Hardest Part of the War.' If you are working with veterans with PTSD and substance abuse issues, these two courses are quite helpful. Using CBT principles, War Zone military vets are encouraged to develop their own recovery plan without the use of traditional intervention techniques which are counter-productive with military veterans. Read about these two courses here on VETERANS ISSUES page - OR click 'COURSES' ON THE TOOL BAR, THEN SCROLL DOWN TO 'VETERANS ISSUES'.
You can find all five of these courses at the bottom of the Addiction Catalog - CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE ADDICTION CATALOG COURSE LIST.
